The Tapestry by Audrey N. Lewis

Writer's picture: josh banksjosh banks

A mother and daughter journey in a world where the motherhood expected role based on gender is particularly viewed in a specific light and to try and live outside those boundaries by current society is looked upon negatively. The obstacles the characters face are relatable by anyone who faces hardships at the hands of gender identification or prejudice. I lost a friend recently and have been allowing the external guide of events thereafter to move me in ways as well as thinking that this book portrays. There are forces at play in our lives which move us to different directions we never would have gone to if left to our own devices. A tapestry is an excellent metaphor for their lives which are interwoven events (good and bad) which drive us to personal growth, humble us in times of change, and create avenues of experience. Ultimately it is about interaction with people or in a nutshell, relationships. The only negative I have is the formatting of book which kind of messed with my flow of reading, but honestly is a great piece of work. Worth reading if you like books that help you see things from different perspectives and carry a message.
