The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Writer's picture: josh banksjosh banks

The novel captures the life of Esperanza Cordero, a young girl on the cusp of being brought into the realities of womanhood. Her life told in the grips of inner city life, reflects on memories of her experiences during one year of her life. The year comes in presumably junior high between 6th and 7th grade. Esperanza talks about her dream and desire for her and her family to have their own home in which they each can have their own bedroom. She narrates the individual stories about the people in her life she interacts with as well as situations which occur that has major significance to her journey.

This is a very eye-opening book which takes the reader into the life and mindset into a young Hispanic girl. She expresses the thought processes of others her age and their aspirations to have a better life. It illustrates the controlled limitations of women in her culture, how they are treated, viewed, and taken advantage of. She gives graphic examples without getting too descriptive of the events (to allow for younger ages to read) which unfold during her time on Mango Street. Cisneros is good at speaking about Esperanza's loss of innocence in a world where sexual harassment, physical/mental abuse, and gender bias brings light to a place which is overlooked often in modern America. This is a must read to anyone who would like to get a small insight into some of America's ethnic issues which continue to exist in our society.
