Okay true believers, here is a fun one coming your way. Are you a child of the 80's and loved movies, television, and comic book icons? This bad boy is for you. Let me take your back to the days of WWF wrestlers, Goonies, Tank Girl, the Punisher, Killer Klowns from outer space....to name a few; are you starting to feel me? This shorter novel hits a plateau of Running Man meets Escape from New York; eat your heart out Snake Plissken. Hughes taps into the past zany world of Chinatown. Name sound familiar? If not, watch 'Big Trouble in Little China' (shameless plug). David Owain Hughes uses 80's icons to create a sordid tale of comedy and horror in this little, literary gem. It's set in a futuristic time where our society has a place which it is 80's all the time and prisoner's in this place take on the avatar of famous 80's people.
The concept is in the future, criminals are put in jail, which has been created as an actual co-ed living co-habitation of living breathing 80's iconic people. If you saw 'Ready Player One', then you can only imagine the stuff Hughes pulls off. Even if a person dies in this place, like Sloth from 'The Goonies,' he can come back again, just as the same avatar but used by a different person. The government is behind the scenes in this futuristic "Big Brother" utopia of pain. What our characters don't know is their exploits in Chinatown are actually being recorded for the pleasure of the rest of the world's viewing. Physical violence, sex, and lots of other disturbing things take place in Chinatown. Hughes in my opinion barely taps the potential of this melting pot of carnal sin, but also there are good guys working to try and help those in need.
What happens though when Pirates attack Chinatown in an effort to eviscerate the entire place to ground zero? Even though these bad-asses from the past are put here for a reason, they won't go quietly into the night without one hell of fight. If you like action, blood, humor, and sadistic imagery...this one is for you. Strap in because it reads fast and you will be left wanting more....
