HYLA: Unto the 7th Generation, Volume I by A. Marieve Monnen

One of the cool features which always allows me to envision the world being created by the author is a visual map of places they talk about in the novel. At the beginning the author has not only created a map, but also listed the characters names and the pronunciation of them. Made life a little easier when reading about them. The first line of the book is great. It has insight into the human element, but not just this, it plays into everyone's understanding about life, "We can never return to the beginning..." I just found this start really telling about the author's ability to utilize personal perception of life, while ingraining into her writing.

There are a lot of moving parts here in regards to the beginning of the novel. Monnen begins by setting the stage based on events in the past and the wars which followed. She explains the importance of the Unwanteds, Seth, Seeth, and the Cliffs to set the stage. The story bounces from each main character and their role in the story. Monnen creates a kind of set up like Robert Jordan did in his writing where he spaced out his main characters, instead of just following one character throughout the story. It flows well and I don't feel there are too many writing flaws. The author connects with how families interconnect when dealing with legacy, elevation in society and friendships. I hate to say it, but even with family, politics are always at play, especially in the hierarchy. I felt the writing style and format of the novel helped make the reading of the novel (flow) easy. Would recommend!
